American McGee's Alice

American McGee's Alice takes Lewis Carroll's Wonderland and gives it a decidedly darker makeover. Alice is no longer simply wandering through a whimsical fantasy populated by eccentric characters; she is fighting her way through a disturbing world shaped by psychological trauma and twisted versions of familiar imagery. Built as a third-person action adventure, the game combines platforming, exploration and combat with an unusually imaginative setting. The environments are packed with grotesque details, bizarre creatures and weapons that would probably never survive a sensible safety inspection. Its atmosphere is the real star, constantly balancing childish Wonderland imagery with something much more sinister. The result feels less like a conventional fairy-tale game and more like someone fed Carroll's books through a gothic nightmare machine. It is strange, stylish and memorable, with enough personality to make even its strangest moments difficult to forget.
