With a name like Dink Smallwood, you’d expect something ridiculous—and you’d be right. Released in 1998 for Windows XP, this action RPG follows a pig farmer with delusions of heroism. The game pokes fun at fantasy clichés, stuffing its world with sarcastic NPCs, bizarre quests, and the occasional chicken murder. Underneath the humor, though, is a surprisingly solid adventure with magic, combat, and exploration. What makes it shine is its self-awareness: it knows it’s ridiculous, and it leans into it. Few RPGs let you go from slopping pigs to saving kingdoms while keeping a straight face—or in this case, a smirk.

Dink Smallwood review
PC Zone (2001): "Graphically, Dink is nothing to write home about, and it's no great shakes in terms of gameplay, either. I challenge anyone to play Dink for more than a few hours without getting completely bored. Worse still are the many graphical glitches you'll come across. At one point I got completely stuck in the landscape for no apparent reason. Dink's one saving grace is its humour, which can often be entertaining, although not entertaining enough to make you want to put up with the game's many problems. Avoid."
Dink Smallwood is a REAL underdog. I never got past the farm, though.
