EducAtlas 1993

EducAtlas 1993 is an educational geography program designed to turn the computer into a digital atlas. During the early 1990s, this was an appealing idea: instead of searching through a large printed reference book, students could explore geographical information directly on a PC. Programs like EducAtlas combined maps, facts, and interactive exploration in an attempt to make learning less passive. The result naturally feels rather different from modern educational software, with its DOS interface and comparatively modest presentation, but that simplicity has historical appeal. There was no satellite imagery, no animated 3D globe, and certainly no endless stream of hyperlinks waiting to distract you. You simply explored the information presented and tried to remember it. EducAtlas captures a period when computers were increasingly being introduced into schools as educational tools. It may look quaint today, but the basic ambition remains familiar: make information easier to explore and, ideally, a little more fun.
