Strife from 1996 is a first-person shooter game developed by Rogue Entertainment and published by Velocity, based on the Doom engine. It's often remembered for being one of the earlier games to blend first-person shooter gameplay with RPG elements, such as dialogue with NPCs, quests, and an overarching storyline. In Strife, players assume the role of a mercenary known as The Front, who becomes embroiled in a conflict against a powerful organization called The Order. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by The Order, and players must navigate through various levels, completing objectives, interacting with NPCs, and battling enemies.
PC Games (1996): "But I like this one. Despite some rough edges, Strife is a definite advance from the conventional 3-D shoot-em-up of the Doom school. And these days, anything that isn't a bare-bones Doom is a definite plus."
Online Gaming Review (1996): "Strife is without a doubt an excellent game. I'm glad I got it, and I'll probably keep playing it. It's definitely worth the buy if you're looking for a game with the action of a DOOM-style game, the depth of an RPG, and the plot line of the best adventure."
