Supernova is a classic science-fiction adventure that puts the player in the uncomfortable position of having to save the galaxy while also figuring out what the game actually expects them to do. Released in 1987, it combines exploration, puzzles, conversation, and a healthy dose of futuristic mystery. The story revolves around an impending catastrophe, naturally, because apparently peaceful science-fiction adventures were considered insufficiently dramatic. You travel between locations, examine objects, interact with characters, and gradually piece together the larger situation. Like many adventures from the period, progress often depends on experimentation and paying close attention to seemingly insignificant details. It can be unforgiving, but there is something satisfying about finally solving a puzzle that initially looked completely unreasonable. Supernova is very much a product of its time, yet its atmosphere and old-school sense of discovery still give it personality.
