Tunneler

Tunneler is a wonderfully simple two-player game built around one extremely important idea: dig toward your opponent and try not to crash into the scenery first. Each player controls a vehicle underground, carving a tunnel through the battlefield while searching for a chance to attack. The result is a strange combination of strategy, reflexes, and spatial awareness. Because the tunnels remain behind you, every movement changes the shape of the arena and can create either an escape route or a very embarrassing dead end. The minimal presentation is part of its charm. There are no elaborate cutscenes, character statistics, or complicated inventories, just two machines, a confined arena, and an increasingly tangled collection of tunnels. It is a fine example of how early computer games could create surprisingly tense competition from almost nothing. Simple rules, quick matches, and plenty of opportunities to outsmart a friend.
