Remakes: new versions of old games
Games developed for DOS and other defunct home computers (or Personal Computers) date back to the 80s of the past century. This means they are old and it's diffucult to make them run on modern systems. Graphics, user experience and sound made huge leaps forward over the years, but somehow these old games managed to be remembered by me, you and someone crazy enough to put a lot of effort into remake them.
Some of these old games have been remade from scratch to varying degrees of faithfulness, whether by the hands of big gaming companies, indie developers or simply by individuals who had enough free time and coding skills.

Acid Tetris
DOS1998freewareremake
If you ever looked at regular Tetris and thought, “What this really needs is eye-melting colors and a possible migraine,” then Acid Tetris (1998, DOS) is your jam. It’s the classic block-dropper, now with a palette that screams “I licked a glow stick at a rave.” Gameplay is mostly the same, but the visuals turn every l...
Ack-Ack Attack!
DOS1995remake PLBM Games
In Ack-Ack Attack! (1995, DOS), you operate an anti-aircraft gun and do your best to shoot down waves of enemy planes with what appears to be a potato cannon. The game is loud, frantic, and wonderfully simple — a throwback to the days when “arcade-style” meant “your wrist will hurt after 15 minutes.” It’s not com...
African Adventure
DOS1997remake
African Adventure is one of those games that feels like it was made during a two-hour layover at the airport - but somehow, it works. Set in the savannah, it combines survival, exploration, and a splash of educational trivia (probably). You’ll dodge wild animals, search for artifacts, and occasionally wonder if the devs had ever seen a map of...
Aldo Again
DOS1989remake
Aldo Again (1989) is the platformer that dares to say, “Hey, what if Donkey Kong but with 100% more confusion?” You play as Aldo, a mustachioed man of mystery (and questionable balance) who’s trying to climb platforms, dodge hazards, and maybe figure out why he’s doing any of this. The graphics are primitive, the physics are...
Aldo's Adventure
DOS1987remake
Aldo’s Adventure is what you get when someone squints at Donkey Kong and decides to remake it after four cups of coffee and a long nap. You play Aldo, a brave little guy whose hobbies include climbing platforms, dodging hazards, and falling in love with repetitive music. The levels are simple, the enemies look like they're made of leftover pi...
Antix
DOS1985remake
Antix (1985) is Snake, but with a death wish. Created by the same mad genius behind Tetris, this game takes the familiar snake-trail mechanic and cranks it to eleven. You’ve got to avoid walls, your own tail, and existential dread as the speed ramps up with every delicious dot you eat. One wrong turn and it’s game over — no power-...
Aquanoid
DOS1992remake
Aquanoid (1992) takes the classic Breakout formula and throws it underwater, because bricks are apparently much more intimidating when they're wet. You control a paddle, you bounce a ball, you try to pretend you're not just playing a glorified version of Pong with a marine biology twist. Bonus points for the soundtrack, which sounds like a Casio ke...
Astro Fire
DOS1994freewareremake ORT Software
Astro Fire (1994) is the illegitimate love child of Asteroids and a particularly angry fireworks show. You pilot a tiny ship with a death wish through an endless barrage of asteroids, enemies, and power-ups that may or may not be worth the risk. The pace is fast, the soundtrack is intense, and the explosions are satisfying enough to make Michael Ba...
Attack of the Mutant Camels
DOS2001freewareremake
If you've ever stared at a camel and thought, "What if it shot lasers and had a personal grudge against humanity?", Attack of the Mutant Camels is the fever dream you've been waiting for. Released in 2001 for DOS — yes, someone made a DOS game in the 21st century — it pits you against a herd of surly dromedaries with serious attitude pr...
Auf Wiedersehen Monty
Windows XP/98/952001remake
In Auf Wiedersehen Monty, our favorite marsupial is back, and this time he's taking a very pixelated Eurotrip. Released for Windows XP in 2001, it's a nostalgia-fueled platformer that insists you master gravity-defying jumps and memorize half the map. Monty may not speak a word, but his backpack is full of traveler's checks and questionable decisio...
Bagman
Windows 10/112013freewareremake
No, it’s not about a guy who holds your groceries. Bagman is a retro-style indie throwback where you’re a pickaxe-wielding convict trying to steal bags of cash from a mine while dodging guards and gravity. Released decades after the original arcade version, this 2013 remake proves two things: pixelated heists never go out of style, and ...
Bananoid
DOS1991freewareremake Banana Development
Is it Breakout? Is it Arkanoid? No — it’s Bananoid, the fruitiest bat-and-ball clone you never asked for. With bananas, monkeys, and psychedelic colors, it feels like someone laced Pong with banana peels and Saturday morning cartoons. It’s not original, but it sure is bananas.
Bert and the Snake
DOS1983remake
In Bert and the Snake, you are Bert. And yes, there's a snake. That’s the plot. It’s a maze game from a time when naming conventions were refreshingly honest and graphics were aggressively square. You guide your little Bert blob through perilous corridors while avoiding a rather enthusiastic snake with boundary issues. It's the kind of ...
Beyond Columns
DOS1989remake
Beyond Columns is what happens when someone looks at Tetris and says, “What if we made it... slightly fancier?” This match-three puzzle game involves dropping shiny columns of gems and aligning them for points, all while trying to ignore the creeping realization that you’ve been playing for an hour. It’s colorful, fast-paced...
Bomb Jack remake
DOS2002remake
The classic bomb-defusing, platform-hopping, enemy-dodging chaos of Bomb Jack gets a fresh coat of pixels in this 2002 DOS remake. You’re still the tiny superhero hopping around grabbing bombs while evil smiley faces and floating pyramids try to end your run—because of course they do. The updated version keeps the original’s frant...
