Rogue is the 1984 DOS version of one of the most influential dungeon-crawling role-playing games ever created. Players explore procedurally generated dungeons, fight monsters, collect equipment, and search for the Amulet of Yendor. Every new game creates a different dungeon, making exploration unpredictable and ensuring that memorizing one perfect route is impossible. The famous permadeath system means that when a character dies, the adventure is over rather than conveniently reloading a save. That can sound cruel, and it is, but it also gives every decision real weight. Rogue's simple ASCII presentation leaves much to the imagination, yet its systems are remarkably deep. It established ideas that would influence generations of RPGs and roguelikes. Before graphical monsters looked terrifying, the letter “D” on a screen could already ruin your evening.
