SimHealth is a 1994 DOS simulation that tackles the complicated subject of healthcare management. Players take on the role of a decision-maker responsible for balancing healthcare costs, services, insurance systems, and the needs of a population. Rather than providing the escapism normally associated with computer games, it asks players to wrestle with policy choices and the consequences of different approaches to healthcare. The simulation is heavily focused on systems and statistics, making it more of an educational management tool than a traditional entertainment title. It is fascinating as a historical snapshot because healthcare debates have changed remarkably little in some respects. SimHealth demonstrates that even Maxis's simulation formula could be applied to subjects far more complicated than building a virtual city. It may not be the first game you choose for a relaxing evening, but if you have ever thought urban planning was too cheerful, this is certainly an alternative.
