Star Wars: Dark Forces is a 1995 first-person shooter that brought the Star Wars universe into a darker, more action-oriented setting. Players control Kyle Katarn, a mercenary working for the Rebel Alliance, as he investigates Imperial projects and battles stormtroopers, droids, and other enemies across a variety of environments. The game expands on the films with original locations, weapons, characters, and missions, creating a surprisingly substantial campaign. Unlike many shooters of its period, Dark Forces puts some emphasis on exploration and environmental puzzles, so running forward and shooting everything is not always enough. The atmosphere is unmistakably Star Wars, but the action has a tougher, more grounded feel than the movies. Its levels can be sprawling and occasionally confusing, yet that makes reaching the objective more satisfying. It is basically Star Wars after someone removed the cinematic safety rails and handed you a blaster.
