Rise of the Robots is a 1994 fighting game built around the idea of heavily armed machines battling through a futuristic industrial world. Players control a combat robot and face increasingly powerful opponents, each designed with different weapons and abilities. The game was promoted heavily for its impressive technology and presentation, particularly its rendered character models, which looked striking at the time. Unfortunately, the gameplay itself is considerably more limited than the graphics suggest, with relatively straightforward combat and a smaller variety of moves than many competing fighters. Still, Rise of the Robots remains an interesting example of mid-1990s technological ambition. It is proof that making robots look impressive is one challenge, while making them genuinely fun to punch, kick, and control is an entirely different engineering problem.
