Starflight is a 1986 science-fiction role-playing and exploration game that gives players an entire galaxy to investigate. You command a starship, travel between planets, land on alien worlds, gather resources, encounter strange civilizations, and gradually uncover a much larger mystery. The sense of freedom is remarkable for its age. Rather than following a narrow path, players are encouraged to explore and decide where to go, with discoveries often leading to completely unexpected adventures. The game mixes trading, combat, planetary exploration, diplomacy, and character management into one expansive package. Starflight can feel intimidating initially, but its open-ended design is precisely what makes it memorable. There is always another planet to visit or another clue to investigate. It captures the romance of space exploration better than many games with much fancier graphics. Of course, once you realize fuel costs money, suddenly conquering the galaxy starts looking like a rather expensive hobby.
