Shadow Warrior is a 1997 first-person shooter starring Lo Wang, a wisecracking ninja who approaches corporate warfare with a sword, an arsenal of firearms, and a remarkable lack of concern for subtlety. Built on the Build engine, the game delivers large levels filled with enemies, secret areas, weapons, traps, and plenty of destructible scenery. The katana gives combat a distinctive close-range edge, while firearms provide the more traditional solution to problems that refuse to stand still. Shadow Warrior is intentionally outrageous, mixing action with crude jokes and exaggerated violence in a way that firmly places it in the Duke Nukem era of PC shooters. Beneath the humor is a surprisingly enjoyable shooter with imaginative environments and entertaining weapon design. It is loud, ridiculous, and occasionally very silly. In other words, exactly the sort of game where a ninja might reasonably carry a rocket launcher.
