Based on the fantasy novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Death Gate (1994) throws you into an epic, puzzle-heavy adventure. Imagine Myst, but with more dragons and a script that clearly went through a Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast’s notebook. The story is rich, the puzzles sometimes devious, and the atmosphere immersive enough to make you forget you’re staring at chunky DOS graphics. The humor slips in at odd moments, reminding you the developers didn’t take themselves too seriously. It’s one of those games where you’ll feel clever when you solve something, only to realize it took you an hour and ten cups of coffee.
