Abandonware DOS title

System Shock

System Shock drops you into a space station run by an AI that has clearly read too many villain manuals and decided to try them all at once. SHODAN, the game’s iconic antagonist, doesn’t just want you dead—she wants you to understand how insignificant you are first. The gameplay mixes exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving in a way that feels dense and slightly intimidating, like opening a manual you’re not sure you’re qualified to read. But stick with it, and you’ll find a deeply immersive experience that practically invented the blueprint for modern immersive sims. It’s clunky by today’s standards, yes, but also eerily effective, like an old machine that still hums with quiet menace.

System Shock review

Electronic Games (1995): "It’s better than Doom. In fact, System Shock is one of the best games in a long time. It’s one of those rare titles that’s more like a lived experience instead of a game. In System Shock, Looking Glass and Origin created a cyber-fever-dream full of adrenaline, anxiety and fear. In other words: fun!"

Retro gamer collector's corner:

The original September 1994 floppy disk release of System Shock had no support for spoken dialogue. The enhanced CD-ROM was released in December 1994, which featured full speech for logs and e-mails, multiple display resolutions, and more detailed graphics.
