The Secret of Monkey Island

The Secret of Monkey Island is one of the great adventure games, combining clever puzzles, absurd comedy, memorable characters, and a pirate story that happily refuses to take itself seriously. You play Guybrush Threepwood, an aspiring pirate whose greatest ambition is to become a mighty buccaneer despite having remarkably little practical experience. His quest leads through tropical islands, pirate bars, mysterious ruins, sword fights, and an increasingly ridiculous supernatural plot. The humor is everywhere, from dialogue and item descriptions to the deliberately silly situations Guybrush finds himself in. Puzzles encourage experimentation rather than reflexes, and the game's point-and-click interface makes exploration approachable. Its writing is the real treasure, though: characters are distinctive, jokes are frequent without becoming exhausting, and the adventure constantly rewards curiosity.
