Wipeout

Wipeout is a futuristic racing game built around speed, aggressive competition, and vehicles that apparently have no interest whatsoever in ordinary road safety. The anti-gravity craft race around twisting tracks while using weapons and power-ups to gain an advantage, creating a blend of racing and combat that became one of the defining ideas of the genre. Success requires learning the tracks as much as simply holding down the accelerator, because high speed is only useful if you can remain on the circuit. The DOS version naturally lacks the visual polish of later editions, but the sense of momentum and futuristic style still comes through. There is a satisfying tension between taking a safe line and attempting something reckless for a few extra seconds. Wipeout is the sort of game where “going faster” is both the objective and the most reliable way to make your next mistake happen considerably sooner.
