Santa Paravia en Fiumaccio is a 1988 DOS adaptation of the classic economic and political strategy game in which players attempt to rule a small Italian principality. The objective is to manage taxes, population, land, food, and public works while keeping the kingdom prosperous enough to remain in power. Decisions have consequences, and poor management can leave the ruler facing financial trouble, unhappy citizens, or an increasingly empty treasury. The game is surprisingly deep considering its simple presentation, offering a compact lesson in economics and medieval administration. There are no dragons to defeat or enchanted swords to collect, but balancing the budget can be just as frightening. Santa Paravia en Fiumaccio is an entertaining example of early strategy design, where spreadsheets could be more dangerous than monsters. Rule wisely, spend carefully, and above all remember that medieval peasants apparently have opinions about taxes.
